NaBloPoMo Day Ten - Fun Monday, in Honor

Day Ten.

It's FUN MONDAY again, and this week's hostess is Janis, who wanted us to show our support and salute to the veterans who have served our country so well.

One of the most stirring things I've done in my life was visit Arlington National Cemetery in D.C. I was so overcome with emotion, I had to visit twice during my week-long stay. What struck me during my first tour was the vast number of headstones, just rows and rows of them...I had no idea how many were interred there. Here is a glimpse of that experience:
Please visit Janis' place, and enjoy the other tributes.

I've been to Arlington a couple of times. The first was when I was about 12 - and it made a huge impact on me. My uncle had just come home from Vietnam and I was suddenly aware of what all those white crosses meant.

The second visit was no less awe-inspiring.

I have never been there, but I can completely understand how overwhelming it would be, thanks for sharing the video.

Wonderful post. Thank you. I visited Arlington National Cemetery when I was sixteen. I got to see JFK's tomb and the Eternal Flame. Funny thing, right after we visited they extinguished the Flame because of the gas crisis. Seriously. Now my dad is buried in Fort Worth National Cemetery with one of those marble tombstones. I didn't realize that they weighed 250 lbs and were 4 feet tall with 2 feet sticking out of the ground. Thanks for providing me with that info. I haven't gotten back to see his tombstone since they placed it on his grave. I hope to go soon.

It's a sight I hope to see some day soon. I imagine I'll be overcome.

I live in Arlington and only visit the cemetery when I get on the wrong train. Yes, it's powerful.

sayre - I don't think I'll ever be able to visit without experiencing the emotion.

alison - you owe it to yourself to go, just once.

junebug - I hope you get to go, too...and I am SHOCKED about the eternal flame fact! Thanks for sharing!

desert songbird - I cried like a baby at the changing of the guard. SOBBED.

m@ - there MUST be a soft spot in there, somewhere!

Arlington was amazing....so quiet, peaceful, and sad at the same time.

(and I cried too when I watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown)

If I didn't have to work tomorrow, I would be there to pay my respects. I have been to numerous funerals at the cemetary and they always do them with such respect and honor. It truely is a powerful place, which unfortunately so many of us who live so close to it, take it for granted. My father has chosen to be buried at Quantico National Cemetary because he feels that Arlington should be reserved for the heroes - I don't agree with him, because to me he is a hero - because he is a veteran.

karmyn r - I wonder how someone could NOT cry...I just sat there, trying to stifle my sobs, tears streaming down my face.

bs - I don't agree with him, either - he has earned the right. And I wish I could be there today. If I lived in D.C., I don't think the impact of that place would fade, no matter how many times I visited.
