NaBloPoMo Day Eight - Irritating Phrases

Day Eight.

They say some of a blogger's most popular posts are RANTS...well, when I saw this topic on CNN, I KNEW it was rantworthy.

Recently the Plain English Campaign in the UK conducted a survey to find out their readers’ choice for “most irritating phrase”. Here are the results, in order of "irritation":

1 At the end of the day
2 (joint) At this moment in time
2 (joint) Like
4 With all due respect
5 To be honest
6 Touch base
7 I hear what you're saying
8 Going forward
9 Absolutely
10 Blue sky thinking

Hmmmm...yeah....you know what? I have some more things that irritate me. Here is my short list:

1. The use of the word "irregardless." It's not a word, people.
2. Text language. I can't communicate with my daughter anymore.
3. Usage of "also," "too," and "in addition" IN THE SAME SENTENCE.

So, what irritates you?

Recently, the phrase, "you know what I mean?" has been popping up. Someone will be telling me a story and this phrase comes up about every 30 seconds or so.

I thought, at first, it was just one person who was doing it, but now I am hearing it everywhere.

Yes, I know what you mean - now stop asking.

People that don't seem to know how to us "me" and "myself" (or you and yourself) correctly...eg: "He gave that to myself." What??? makes me grit my teeth.

All the corporate buzzwords like "thinking outside the box" and many others, have gotten so old.

When people say "I could care less". Don't they really mean "I couldn't care less"?

To be honest, irregardless of what anyone says, like you know, many of those irritate me, too, also...you know? Truthfully.

I never get annoyed as long as people seem to understand how to write a sentence. I spend my days trying to teach twenty somethings how to make notes on accounts and write emails. Patience is the only virtue I have left.

Here's one of my most hated, courtesy the political shows I watch daily:

* game-changer (as in, "what does McCain need in terms of a game-changer to turn this around?")

Also, for some reason my peeps on MSNBC have been saying "too cute by half" for about six months and they make me want to throw things each time they say it.

"Anyways" and "Walmarts" immediately come to mind.

"Touch base" irritates me. In addition, also, too, "ya think" drives me batty.

I'm making my kids pay me a dime every time they say "like" in a sentence.

karmyn r - I know what you mean. LOL! It's almost like asking, do you understand? Sigh.

moi - yeah, and our friend m@ busted me out for doing that here recently. I suck.

jay - you are making me think I need to write a whole post of business phrases.

kila - YES! SO TRUE! Good one!

swampy - you made me grit my teeth, just a little!

spellbound - I have no patience anymore - can I borrow some?

melissa - I'm sad to say I have NO IDEA what "too cute by half" means - and obviously no one has said that to me.

arkansas songbird - yeah, where the heck did "Walmarts" come from, anyway?

junebug - "ya think" is SO sarcastic - I agree.

desert songbird - TRUE...I need to think of things the offsprings says that annoy me.
