NaBloPoMo Day 29 - Life in the Country. Or Not.

Day Twenty Nine.

Ever since moving into our new home, I've had to get used to "country life." I know, I only live 2/10 of a mile outside the city limits...but remember, I'm a CITY girl at heart. Big city...like Houston kinda city. Even living in my small town seems extremely rural and isolated.

Across the road from our home are several pastures. Do you see what I see in this photo? There is a hay bale in that sunny spot of field. And atop that bale? Not just one, but TWO birds of prey. Zoomed in and cropped...you can see them. We usually break out the binoculars to spy.
Another afternoon, we spied something in roughly the same pasture. Can you tell what it might be?
Zooming in, we spot a deer! It's amazing how far one can see with the naked eye. Here is another little critter that ended up on the hood of my car. Well, he ended up there after I was terrorized by several people, as they shook him in my face. Menacingly.

Naturally, as things go...he was worse for the ordeal than I was.

I'll get used to living here - I know I will. And the dog has already been skunked once, and I survived that. I love the peace and quiet...but the critters? Gonna take some getting used to.

Is that a TV antenna on the hood of your car? Really, what is that?

We live 10 miles from a city with a GMA population of almost 2 million but my house is in a very rural area with way too many deer and a lot of small furry wildlife. We have praying mantis in our front yard every summer, sitting in the azaleas eating bugs. My husband likes to toss them the occasional pest insects and watch them go. Although I realize they look scary they are a very good insect to keep around.

What. Is. That. Thing?!

Seriously, if Marnie and I are going to come visit, that thing and its family need to move out.

I grew up out in the middle of nowhere, 15 miles from a town in all directions. I do not miss all the insects and critters! I love being in town now, it's so very convenient. A little more privacy would be nice, though.

You sure have nice views to enjoy!

it's the proverbial tits up bug.
except there are no tits.

It makes me feel sad. (not because it has no tits.)

Perhaps I was too obtuse. It's a preying mantis. It is tiny and dead. You are all large and living. Do not fear.

mark - an insect...read further down this comment for the answer....

Spellbound - the same can be said for Grand-daddy LongLegs and spiders, but I don't want them around, either!

Melissa - it's a WALKING STICK. I actually have video of the thing "dancing" to some music the kid was playing. Then the dog got it...then it was used to threaten me...then...demise.

Kila - thanks - the views WAY make up for the hordes of insects and critters.

M@ - and you're a big....wait...no, that wouldn't be nice...

Pamela - I felt sad for it, too...strangely...

Spellbound - it is a walking stick...and it is BIG and LONG but now, not so scary.
