Tiggergate

I'm getting VERY excited! My trip to Washington D.C. is finally coming together...and sneaking up very soon. I've never been, so I'm open to any and all suggestions as to what "not to miss." Pictured to the left is the fabulous Watergate Hotel, where we will be staying. Seriously, what says "D.C." better than this place? Corruption, scandal, intrigue. I can't wait.

Swampy has already provided some great ideas, and I already know that I want to attend a show or the ballet at the Kennedy Center, visit Arlington National Cemetery, and take a tour of the Monuments by Moonlight! I don't want to cram too much into the week, and definitely want to leave a good day to check out shopping, but what would you suggest?

If you've been to D.C., or merely WANT to go in your lifetime, what would be the MUST-DO/SEE event for you?

Nice choice, Tigger. I run by the Watergate on weekends and it's a beautiful scene in the summertime.

For shopping, I'd suggest you take a stroll through nearby Georgetown to check out some of the stores but if you want to go to a mall go to the Pentagon City one, which is the nicest mall in that locality....

A tour of the monuments by moonlight sounds great (if you're with a crowd and not alone) but remember to dress warmly as it's been a bit chilly here and is actually snowing lightly right now.

I would also suggest touring the DC public library system, where you'll see some of DC's finest homeless people. And remember to ask about the cab fare BEFORE you leave b/c there are no meters, just a zone system that's confusing for tourists AND residents.

Dupont Circle is a neighborhood that's worth seeing if you're going out for morning coffee or something and there's a sex shop not too far one block north on P street.

Have fun.

um - everything Matt said.

I've been to D.C. three times, but just did the touristy Mall and museum stuff. I think it is a beautiful city and the White House was a lot smaller than I thought it would be.

All of the above. I love DC, and I've only been once, but if I get the chance to go back again, I'm definitely heading back to Arlington. I hope you get to see a changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It will send chills up and down your arms - incredible sight.

By accident, we found the actual home (now a museum) where Lincoln died (near Ford's Theater). They had (way back in 1990) the actual blood-stained pillow upon which his head lay.

Any of the Smithsonian museums take a lifetime to tour, but I HAD to get a gander at the Hope Diamond, just to say I did.

DuPont Circle is a funky place, and the Metro station there boasts that its really looooooooooong escalator is one of the longest in the world (I think I heard this).

Tiggerlane, I loved the Smithsonian Museums, strolling in the embassy area and eating in the wonderful ethnic restaurants in that area, doing an FBI tour. Lots of fun things to do. You're going to have fun!

And their subway system is great. Even the zoo is wonderful!

I would love to go back and spend time in the Smithsonian.

Hey Tigger ! So glad I had the time to stop by to see this post. I was wondering if you had left yet. Since I've been absent from blogging, I haven't been up-to-date. Thanks for the 'mention'...you have ALL my suggestions. Have a glorious time. We expect a detailed account of your time there. Lots of pics.

matt - thanks for the tip about cabs - we plan to ride the Metro all the way, so hopefully we'll be cab-free. Hopefully. And the sex shop tip - THAT's the kind of tip I was looking for!

karmyn - sounds like I should skip the White House!

desert songbird - I'm wanting to see the Hope Diamond, too! But the Smithsonian seems like this massive complex, so I'm not sure how much I can do. Dupont seems like a fun place - I'll probably go there!

dan - glad to hear the subway system is good. I was worried, after my experience in Chicago. Definitely will check on the FBI tour.

pamela - what a near-miss, that's amazing!

c - I don't know! Probably not, though - I'll check.

swampy - thanks again. I had to buy ANOTHER digital camera, since the kid is snagging hers and her video camera. She'll be on her own tour with a forum group - so I had to get another, just for the trip!

matt-man - we'll be passing like strangers in the night. I don't get ther until the 26th, so same some liquor for ME!

OOh, the library sounds great! And the Smithsonian. You know, until reading this post, I've never wanted to go to DC. Now I kind of do.

Have a great time. I can't wait to hear about it.
