Blogiversary! (Did I spell that right?)

A whole year! And looking back, I find it typical that my first post mentioned football.

A big trip is creeping up on me, so I'm scrambling to make arrangements - or at least figure out a plan. The kid was invited to this leadership forum in Washington D. C. I have never been there, and there's no way I'm putting her on a plane alone. Another mother and her son will be traveling with us, so there's some security in that fact. I've been pricing hotels suggested by the forum staff - and let me tell you, they are PRICEY. I'm in a time-crunch, too, as we leave March 26th.

Have any of you been to D.C.? Any warnings about crime-ridden areas, where I might not want to stay? We have to fly into Dulles, and all the hotels suggested by the forum folks are in Alexandria and Arlington, VA, which makes me think that is close to where the offspring will be staying.

Any suggestions will be MORE than appreciated! Embarking on this trip, I feel a lot like the guys in this video:

I am so impressed that you posted a picture the very first time. I didn't figure it out for days.
My daughter lived in D.C., so I've been there many times. If you will e-mail me, I can give you some tips.

Only been there once and loved it.
If I had it all to do again I would take one of those bus tours. THEN, go back to the places I wanted to do in more depth.
Plus, time for the Smithsonian.

I've been to D.C. a couple of times - and I think you will be okay if you stick to downtown and the Mall areas. I don't think any of the "seedy" areas will be around you.

And hey - are those parachutes for slowing them down or jumping over the huge killer rocks? Not my idea of a fun skiride down the mountain!!!

Happy Happy!! And yes, I think you spelled it right.

I will be going to Washington DC in July so I expect a report back... I've never been either.

I live in Arlington, VA, just across the river from DC.

I would suggest paying the price to stay near the event (so you save on transportation costs.) I always thought the Westin on Dupont Circle was good but you might be able to find better deals in Arlington and Alexandria. There are tons of hotels around here b/c this is the heart of the military-industrial complex. Check the usual online suspects for better rates but don't skimp so much that getting places is a major headache for you....

In the city, I would stay west of 16th Street when you're out and about during the evening. The Mall area is now "safe" for tourists during the evening but I'd go during the day.

Happy Anniversary!

I haven't been to D.C. in a long time but I do remember there being LOADS of fun things to do. I think we stayed near the embassies, which meant that there were plenty of exotic restaurants in which to eat.

Have fun!

Dang it! I've been having problems with Blogger lately, and my comments seem to be disappearing.

Anyway, while in DC my best advice is to use The Metro to travel anywhere: it's fast, efficient, clean, and takes you to lots of the free tourist sites. As far as other info, as much research as you can do via the Internet and personal recommendation, the better. I think you'll have a great trip if you have a plan before you go.

Happy Blogiversary!

Happy Blogiversary! If you don't have to drive in DC, don't!! Traffic there bites the big one!

I just realised something, while your blog is called 'the Neophyte Blogger', you've been blogging longer than almost anyone I know.

You guys are already SUCH a big help...I'm filing these tips away. Don't think I'm not going to be needing more advice!

And thanks for the congrats.

DubYaT - Just b/c I've been dabbling at this writing thing, doesn't mean I know a darn thing about blog sites. I would LOVE to change the masthead, or colors, etc...but I'm a HTML idiot. My daughter is a pro at it (on myspace), and I'm accomplishing a lot just to LINK to something!

I guess the fact that I'm still here is a testament to my determination!

OMG, that video scared the crap outta me, LOL.

Never been to D.C., so I'm no help, but I hope you two have a wonderful time! What an incredible opportunity for her!

Congrats on the blogoversary. I've enjoyed reading you. Although I have to say that you and Yas really disturbed me with the butt padding revelation.
