Emerging in the New Year

Happy New Year! No, I have not been hiding under a rock - but merely taking a break from all things "normal" in life and mourning the upcoming end of football season. We had a FABULOUS New Year's Eve, filled with fun and friends and as you can see here, the traditional sparklers. Sparklers create a LOT of smoke, so it was tough to get good photographs. Everyone behaved themselves, and I was able to crawl into bed by 4:00AM, with all the dishes complete and only one sleepover guest (who had planned to sleepover days ago, and had given us fair warning).
Better yet, I only gained one measly pound during the holiday season. Yesterday, I cuddled up on the couch and immersed myself in the BCS Bowl games. I even stayed up VERY LATE to watch the end of the Boise State/OU game, possibly the most thrilling game I've seen in ages. I am a football addict and married one of the few men on the planet who could care less if football existed. He will watch a game with me every so often, but usually he rolls his eyes and goes in the other room to watch the History Channel or the Military Channel. He has never understood my obsession with the sport, even though I've tried to explain how phenomenal the athletes must be to endure their beatings, week after week...to leap into the air to catch a floating spiral...to land with at least one foot inbounds...but it is to no avail. The other night, I was lamenting the end of NCAA play, and it hit me. What if Roger could only watch the History Channel 18 weeks out of the year, and then only on Saturdays, Sundays, sometimes Mondays and Thursdays, and only at specific times (provided there are no "blackouts")? As I proposed this to him, I noticed his face change. "Besides," I continued, "You ALWAYS know how things are going to end up on the History Channel. You ALWAYS know who is going to win. It's not like the Germans might turn it all around if you miss ONE EPISODE."

He was very understanding last night, as I insisted on catching the end (and OVERTIME, at that!) of the game. I had migrated to the bedroom, trying to stay up long enough to see the finish, and he was well on his way to dreamland. He didn't smack me a single time, as I would shout, "No WAY!" or "I can't BELIEVE it!" or "UNREAL!" - though I know I woke him up. Maybe he won't look at me like I'm a freak, the next time I spend an entire day watching football. (And if you have no idea how fantastic the ending of this game was, read up on the details here. Nothing like a game where 22 points are scored in the final 1:26 of regulation play!)

Wasn't that an awesome game? I hate to say this living in OK - but I was rooting for Boise State. . . get really tired of the Boomer Sooner fans. . .The Broncos were ready for the Sooners and IT SHOWED. . .

Hold onto your socks -- I did NOT watch the Fiesta Bowl. I know, I know -- how can I show my face in sports circles again? And I even live in the same town where this game is played, for cryin' out loud! In my defense, we had a family member visiting, and we went out to eat and other stuff. We actually found a new restaurant that had wood-fire pizzas and televisions at each of the booths for us to watch The Rose Bowl (I'm SOOOOOO glad those damn Wolverines got their butts kicked!!!!) Anyway, it's great news for Boise State, and I can't wait to see the rest of the Bowl games, but this dragging them out throughout the weeks is ridiculous.

Anyway, by the time we got home, I was so tired from this blasted cold I've been fighting for too many weeks, I didn't watch any more football. I can't believe it's almost the end of football season -- waaaaah! GO COLTS! (sure hope they figure out how to defend Kansas City's run...)

I'm still kinda shocked by this Darrent Willams thing. I mean, I'm not a Broncos fan, but how strange to watch someone play in a nationally televised football game and then just hours later be shot dead? I guess given the proliferation of guns and their association with athletes, not so weird, though.

Oh, and about the sparklers? A staple of my my childhood in Indiana, but those things are strictly off-limits here in AZ, so my kids do not now the joy of sparklers. Bummer, huh?

Glad you had a great holiday season!

Gained only one pound? Good for you! I think I gained one pound just looking at the sumtuous spread you had!

And that one pound ... water retention! Yup! You're probably right back to your previous weight right now. Right? Right? :)

Ergh! I hate typos!

I meant to say that my kids do not KNOW the joys of sparklers since they are forbidden here in the desert.

Ack!

My husband says that last nights game was one of the most exciting games all time. (I only watched parts of it....caught up on blogging instead. Shame on me).

and only 1 lb - YOU GO GIRL!!!!! I wish I could say the same. Okay 3 lbs isn't bad, but I need to reverse that by a factor of 10 immediately.

Happy new year, Tiggerlane! Nice pictures and story but . . being German by birth . . you just can never be absolutely sure that the Germans might not turn it all around!! Heehee!!

The ending of that game was bananas, and I wasn't even a fan of either team. But I have to give them credit for playing like maniacs.

BTW, Happy New Year.

It was indeed an incredible game. I am ready for tonight's game. I have plenty of booze to drown my tears in should my beloved Fighting Irish get blown out. Cheers, and Happy New Year!!

Shauna - Yes, indeed! I always tend to root for the underdogs.

Desert Songbird - FOR SHAME! But you are a better person for not ignoring your friends. I am too lame - I'll ignore them in the same room if football is on.

vicki - I'm totally stumped. Help me out?

Dan - I'm drinking tons of water all day, hoping to erase the pound. Since I've only peed once, it's not going too well.

karmyn - Based on 'net reports, I think it well may be one of the best college games of all time!

Pamela - YES! A Boise State player proposed to his girlfriend. He is only a sophomore, though - too bad he wasn't a bit older. They were both cute.

marnie - I still want to get rid of 10 more...know where I could send those?

swampy - Happy NY to you, too! (another resolution of mine is to be more faithful about blog visiting.)

Erik - Now you're gonna make me watch the History Channel. DANG! Thanks for the giggle.

james - HNY to you, too! I love games like that. Maniac football - only in the NCAA!

Matt - I'll be drinking as well. And cheering for the Irish, since LSU squashed Arkansas this year.

Football? And you're not FROM the South?

The way I see it, baseball season is only a few months away now.

Oh, and regarding World War I....

We won!

Football is okay but really it's not that far removed from the caveman days of being in top form to catch your dinner. But I see your point.

My DH watched the game and was jumping around and yelling and hooting (while I was blogging and telling him to quiet down before he woke up all the kids, LOL!). He's still talking about that game. I'm not into football, but it does sound amazing.

The food picture is making me drool.

Crikey, I'm not sure what happened to my last comment.

Anyway, I'm hitting the Stoli since my Irish are sucking it up big time in the Sugar Bowl right now. Matt-Man, I'm sure, is well ahead of me.

And to answer your question on my blog, yes, Bond is a big-time Taylor Hicks fan. He's trying to convert me.

The spread looks marvelous!! As you know I totally share Roger's view of football....and I know you don't care, but there it is anyway!!! Glad your party went well. Sorry I was too lazy to drive back to your house, but I really, really, really enjoyed our visit Sunday morning!! The loot was great, too!! Thanks!!
