Back to Our Regularly Scheduled Programming

Whew! It got a little heavy in here this week, or was it just me? Dang those extra tacos I've been eating...

Well, if I wasn't having enough of an identity crisis already, I'm wondering what the heck is happening with my kid. She is a camera whore (yeah, I'm gonna get the "2008 Mother of the Year" award for calling my daughter a whore). I recently found these "self-portraits" on our home computer. First, we have "I Only Have One Good Eye" Kid:

(Honestly, I like this picture - but is this my kid?)

Next up, she is pictured here on the right - looking LIKE AN ABSOLUTELY NORMAL 14-YEAR OLD GIRL. The kind that makes a mom think, "Yeah, I'm doing okay - she is using the right cleanser, she is wholesome, she has self-confidence, and she hasn't been smoking crack in the girls' restroom at middle school."And THEN?

Then...

I'm not sure if this is creativity, or if she is secretly following the doctrine of Marilyn Manson. I might need to check her room for dripping candles and instruments of torture. I also might need to locate the cat.Yellow eyes?

Where's my baby?

Whew, the yellow eye one is scary. But you have the wholesome cheerleader one to back up her normalcy. She's just playing. I like to make myself skinny on my computer.

Is that her natural hair color? It's gorgeous!

The one eye thing is making me laugh. The yellow eye is just scaring me.

My daughter does the same thing. She is blonde and pale, and I think the heavy make up might look even more garish on her. A couple of days ago she came out of her room with her hair draped over one and eye and said to me, "Do I look like Veronica Lake?"

After claiming mother of the year award 2008 for calling your daughter a whore, a paragraph or two later I misread wholesome as whoresome. Perhaps I should read a bit slower. That would definitely get you mother of the year award though.

Oh God. My daughter is a not quite 12yo 6th grader. Is this what I have to look forward to?!

Aaaaaack!

Don't ya just LOVE High School?

I like all of them, but I just LOVE your commentary! Blue hair, yellow eyes, a flashed out face...very creative. I think it looks cool. It's not like she is walking around looking like this. Unless she bought yellow contacts you were not aware of!!

Wait! She is in middle school? DUH! I was going on her age. Sorry! Is your HS only 10th through 12th grade?

simply jenn - it's naturally dark, but she had it colored a little darker than normal. And TEACH ME how to make myself skinny on Photoshop. I'm freakin' serious!

beckie - ditto, and double-ditto.

kaycie - okay - check the computer - pronto! Sheesh - why couldn't I have had a boy?

mark - thank you (taking a deep bow now)...are you a parent?

desert songbird - lock her up NOW.

kaytabug - no contact, thankfully. She is actually in the 8th grade - for a few more months! SCARY.

my nieces do the same thing, take sultry mysterious pictures of themselves to post on their BeBo sites. (they're too young for facebook.)

it's definitely alarming, but it's all a pose, all in fun. they're experimenting.

Not to worry.....she's just playin' with the camera!! Just keep repeating that to yourself...over and over and over. Mine's 22 now and I survived! Maybe I should have a tshirt made??

You should see some of the pictures on our computer. We have an iMac and of course the camera is built into it and with Photo Booth you can use different filters to make funny pictures and other effects. We have some pretty wild ones I can assure you.

I wouldn't worry too much about the MM look. It could be worse...it could be Charles Manson!!!
(I actually like MM's music...weird eh? Must be the old rocker in me)

Do you have photoshop?? It looks like she's been having some fun there (yellow eyes and BLUE hair!)

I love how creative she is!

ha ha. I need to have her help me with my photoshop.

laurie - yeah, experimenting with the photos is LOTS better than what they all COULD be experimenting with!

bermudabluez - YES! Great idea on the t-shirt! And now I have a new chant - thanks.

sirdar - hate to admit it, but I like his music, too! Must b/c of my Nine Inch Nails obsession. And I wish I knew how to do all that stuff on Photoshop - I really am a neophyte.

claudia - we have Photoshop Elements, which I guess isn't the full thing - but she did this in some other program she found out about at school. Dang EAST class!

kila - I do, too - but finding a good job in the field of "creativity" in her future worries me...ugh.

pamela - the kid is amazingly fast, too - she does movie edits, and I want her to win an Oscar so I can attend the show. Now if I can just figure out how to mold her career...

Well, yellow eyes or not, at least she's pretty. She clearly takes after her hot momma. :)

Tig,

Is your daughter looking for creepy older men? If so, good job on this one!

memphis steve - make me blush, now, will ya?

m@ - LOL!! Are you a candidate?

swampy - I'm thinking "photo contest" for the yellow eyes.

arkansassongbird - yeah, only a more panicked version when you are the mom.

I don't see how you can truly be happy with yourselves if you must hide/alter your flawed bodies & faces with photoshop. Most people aren't THAT judgemental. If they are, then it is very apparent that they have flaws as well.
In regards to the blogger's daughter: she's a normal teenager. Kids are weird, and their friends are even more weird. As a 22 year old bachelor, who provides for himself, and has no need to look for mommy or daddy for financial support-- I can assure you that you aren't doing anything wrong. The moment you parents stop loving and worrying about your kids is the instance where things fall apart and the parenting award is tarished. In order to make a long comment short: be true to yourselves, and your families. Also, trust condoms and spay/neuter your pets.
