Fun Monday Deeds

This week's hostess is Nikki, and she had a REAL assignment for us:

"For Monday, September 10th, we are challenged with doing a good deed. I am not looking for a story of when you have offered your help in the past, I actually want you in the next two weeks to go out and help someone. Go visit a nursing home, cook dinner for someone sick or with a new baby, donate to a charity or even send just a "thinking of you card" to someone who needs it. It doesn't matter what your good deed is, or how great it is. It just needs to help someone!"

Well, this was tough for me - not because I'm not a "do-gooder," but b/c I find myself doing good deeds all the time. What parent doesn't? The most recent good deed was taking eight children to the local county fair, so that their parents wouldn't have to brave the rides and chaperone them all evening. I find myself in this position a LOT, but I would much rather be the chaperone than wonder what my kid is up to.

Much like the "daily affirmations" meme, I have a daily committment to my local Rotary club, the Rotary District, and to Rotary International. Contrary to my husband's first thoughts, Rotary is NOT a car club! In fact, one of our fellow bloggers, Swampy, is also a Rotarian. Rotary has become a part of my life, and every day I find myself asking the questions of Rotary's Four Way Test of the things that we think, say and do:

1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

To me, being a part of this organization has made me live each day a little differently by facing the realization that there are so many people less fortunate than myself. This way of life results in good deeds every week - by virtue of my active participation in this organization. If I listed them all, you would still never get to all the Fun Monday participants!

Here's to a great Monday for you all!

I think your involvement in the Rotarian organization is a huge good deed. Very time consuming. Good deeds grow from other good deeds - keep up the good work that you do.

I've never heard of the Rotarian club but it's sounds like you are full of good deeds.

Taking 8 children to a fair is huge! I bet all the other parents really appreciated this. I've never heard of the Rotary Club but it sounds like you really enjoy it. Lots of good deeds for others. Great Fun Monday post!

Taking 8 kids to a fair?!?!??! Their parents must love you! Awesome job!

Ditto Nikki!

I guess I'm with you, Tiggerlane...just considering others is something I "do". Not that I'm a great person for doing that or anything, it's just how we live, ya know? I'm glad some key people in my life a long, long time ago planted those seeds that the world doesn't revolve around ME! (although sometimes I act like it does! ha!)

Yeah...I'm still shakin' my head over 8 kids at the fair...you're a BRAVE woman!

I agree with everyone else - 8 kids to the fair is above and beyond Good Deed.

I see the Rotary booths at all the fairs but never realized they did so much.

Supervising eight children -some might say foolish! I'd a very good act of kindness. The Rotary club sounds like a very worthwhile organisation.

I really don't know a lot about the Rotary but my oldest son had the opportunity to join in meetings during his senior high school year. He benefited by meeting a manager who offered him a job.

I've spent time in Rotary parks looking for caches but really don't know why the parks are there.

Like you, I'd prefer to be the chaperone. :)

The rotary definitely has a worthwhile ethos! I'd forgotten about it, until I read your post.

ponders out loud: I'm wondering if there is a Rotary organisation in UK.

p.s. like you, i'd prefer to know where my kids are and what they're up too - being the chaperone is fine with me;).

You are my hero. I doubt I would take one kid to a fair, let alone a bunch. It is great you are involved with all those things. We to do some volunteer work and it feels great.

So, 8 kids to a fair and Rotary? Let me guess - favorite ride is a Ferris Wheel?

Hmm nice one Tiff, stick in a logo and say that covers it! Seriously, I commend you on your involvement with Rotary

Sounds like you are a true Rotarian and not one that just goes to the meetings to eat lunch.

Awesome!! High 5! Way to go!!

I am still in awe of 8 big kids to the fair! But I feel the same...I would rather be there and know than not know what my kiddos are up to!

I'll take three out of four on the Four Way Test every time.

beckie - I agree. One life touches another, and so on...

beccy - there is most likely one in your area...look for them!

joy t. - coming HOME with 8 children was the larger task!

nikki - I think the parents were happy - it's not the first year I've done this - kinda tradition.

robin - brave or stupid, not sure which. Riding the rides was NOT good for my neck.

karmyn r - you might check into your local club - they tend to have "qualifications," but our group is thankfully VERY inclusive of anyone who wants to volunteer.

chrisb - I might say foolish, too.

lisa's chaos - there are many young people who benefit from Rotary - I love those stories.

tiger lamb girl - I'm almost POSITIVE there is a group near you. Check www.rotary.org to see!

dawn - I think I benefit more than I tend to want to admit.

myanderings - won't ride that anymore - too scared I'll tip out! Tilt-a-Whirl is my FAV!

willowtree - Yeah, I know - but then, you should go on some of my Rotary adventures.

arkansas songbird - Yup! You know me well.

devin - at least I knew where my daughter was at all times - just look for the tall boy!

debs - thanks! And I HAVE to finish checking out the other good deeds...I'm WAY behind.

pamela - greet and eat is NOT tolerated in my club - thank goodness. In fact, there are many of my club members who do work at the district level - b/c our club is made up of LOTS of women (which is unusual), and you know how we girls are!

kila - I think we all do, in our own way...

kaytabug - Yeah, I had to also mention Rotary, b/c the fair thing is a wee bit self-serving.

in ink - sorry I missed you there. We must have cross-posted.
I have trouble with the last two, to be honest.

i think my grandfather was a Rotarian, but i didn't know about the Four Way Test until several days ago when a co-worker said she'd done a presentation for a Rotary Club on an issue our organization is working on and talked about those questions (which she'd learned as a high school student) as she asked them to support our position. anyway - it was fun to see the questions mentioned again so soon! keep up the good work!

Tiggerlane said...

alisonwonderland - amazing story! And I ask those questions of myself a LOT - but, sometimes, I fail in answering them.

I think taking all the kids out was lovely of you as well. A lot of people don't have the patience for extra kids. I think the more the merrier. They entertain each other. Well Done!

Tiggerlane said...

karisma - I am not sure I have the patience either, but I did resist the urge to scream at them...so everyone was happy in the end!
